Positioning: The Real Reason Your Marketing Isn't Working

RMRengie Mendoza ·June 8, 2026·2 min read

The reason your marketing is not working is probably not your marketing. It is that a stranger cannot tell in three seconds what your best customers already know: who you are for, what you actually fix, and why you over the five other names on the same Google page. That is positioning, and when it is blurry, every dollar you spend has to work twice as hard to cover for it.

Being for everyone makes you invisible

"We serve all homeowners in the greater Nashville area" is not positioning. It is a placeholder for it. When you talk to everyone, you sound like everyone, and a stranger scrolling past has no reason to stop on you instead of the next name saying the same thing.

Picture two HVAC companies, same town, same price, same rating. One says "serving homeowners since 1998." The other says "emergency AC repair for older East Nashville homes, same day, no weekend surcharge." The second is not turning customers away. They became the obvious call for the person sweating at 4pm on a Saturday with a dead unit and a baby in the house. That person does not collect three quotes. They call the business that sounds built for their exact problem.

Specific feels risky and does the opposite of what you fear

Getting specific feels like shrinking your market and turning away work. What actually happens is the right people finally see themselves in what you say. They stop treating you like a commodity and start treating you like the one who understands their problem. A plumber who says "I fix all plumbing problems" competes on price with every plumber in the city. A plumber known for slab leak repair in older homes is having a different conversation, where price is no longer the first question.

But here's the real problem underneath it

Every ad, post, and referral lands on your positioning. If your Google Business Profile description reads like a list any competitor could have written, the click was wasted before it arrived. You are not paying for bad marketing. The money is landing on a blurry target.

The takeaway

Finish one sentence before you spend another dollar on attention: I help ______ get ______. If you stall halfway through, you just found the reason your marketing feels so heavy. Positioning is what makes everything downstream work.
