The Fog That Costs You Money You Can't See

RMRengie Mendoza ·April 20, 2026·2 min read

Most local businesses that feel stuck are not bad at the work. They are unclear about it. And that fog leaks into everything downstream, where it shows up looking like a marketing problem.

This week is about clearing it.

Start with the question your customer is actually asking

Open your homepage and read it like a stranger with four other tabs open. Most of what is there is about you. It talks about your years in business and the equipment you run.

The customer reads all of that and thinks one thing: so what?

They do not care that your grandfather started the company. They care whether their problem gets solved and how their day gets better in the next five seconds. Every sentence that does not answer that is expensive noise.

Sell the result, not the method

"We use high-tech drills" means nothing to a homeowner who wants a shelf hung straight and the wall left clean. Translate every feature into the thing it gives them. You are selling the hole, not the drill.

Then turn the lights on inside your own numbers

Clarity is not only how you talk to the market. It is whether you know your own scoreboard. Busy is not a strategy. If you cannot say your profit margin on the last three jobs after labor and materials, you are flying blind and calling it hard work.

But here's the real problem underneath all of it

Clarity is a decision, and most owners avoid making it. You keep adding services to catch more people, saying yes to low-margin jobs, quoting tire-kickers who were never going to buy. Every addition makes you blurrier, and blurry is the thing keeping you invisible.

The fix is subtraction. A stop-doing list. Naming who you are for and who you are not for, out loud, without flinching.

The takeaway

You cannot get found, trusted, or systemized around something you cannot name. Clarity is the cheapest lever you have and the one that feels like doing nothing, which is exactly why it gets skipped. Decide what you are. The rest gets easier from there.

Clarity
